Maj Gen. Wager Swayne,
Montgomery, Ala

My Dear Sir - As a citizen and practicing Attorney in this, (8th.) Judicial Circuit; I take the liberty of addressing you this note, for the purpose of making inquiry in relation to a matter in which the people generally are much interested.
You are aware that Gen. H. D. Clayton was elected in May last, Judge of this Judicial Circuit, by a very small majority, - and you are doubtless also acquainted with the fact that Gen. C. has not been pardoned by the President - now what I desire to know is: - Will Gen. Clayton be permitted to enter upon and exercise the duties of his office without a pardon? Please answer immediately.

Very truly Yours,
Benj'm Gardner.
