By direction and recommendation of Major General O.O. Howard, I respectfully apply to you for a Clerkship, or any other position in the Bureau under your control.  I have served as an officer in the Navy during the late War, and on the Staff of Acting Rear Admiral H.H. Bell, Com'd'g the West Gulf Squadron at New orleans.  I have letters of recommendation from Commodore H.H. Bell, Commander Sartori, U.S.N. Commander Woolsey, U.S.N. Hon A. M. Wood (late) Mayor of Brooklyn (the late) James Humphrey Member of Congress, and the late, Moses H. Odell Member of Congress, also from many other gentlemen of standing.
I am 21 years of age, and of French descent
