Referring to your endorsement of the 18th instant upon a communication from General Swayne Commissioner &C. for the State of Alabama in which that Officer requests that Bvt Major E H Hasmen of Lieut 81st U.S. Colored Troops. late Mustering officer be directed by report to him for duty, and states that Major Hasmen has been retained since the muster-out of his regiment. for the purpose of mustering out Troops in the South West Department," and that he is now at Montgomery Alabama awaiting orders from the Adjutant Generals Office; in reply thereby I am directed by say that so far as this office is advised the 81st U.S. Colored Troops is now serving in the Department of Louisiana, and has not been mustered out of service, nor is it under orders for muster out.
