In reply to your communication of the 16th ult requesting to be furnished with copies of orders relating to the cessation of the payment of bounties to volunteers, I have the honor to state, that such orders were issued from the War Department, through the Pro Mar. Genls Office, and not promulgated in General Orders for the information of the Army. I have not been able to procure a copy of the order referred to, but cite the following extract from "Paymasters Manual" which will give you the desired information, to wit: "By orders of the War Dept. through the Prov. Mar. Genls. Office the 30' of April 1865, is assumed as the date, beyond which under the calls of the President of July 18" and Dec. 19". 1864 volunteering with bounty shall cease. All men offering to enlist in volunteer organizations after April 30" 1865 are understood to do so without bounty. Circular No. 35, Paymaster Genls Office, May 11" 1865.
