The mills were sold for Thirty five Thousand dollars in confederate money. Thirty Thousand dollars paid down which is now in my Fathers hands worthless. My Father still has the vouchers for the remaining Five Thousand dollars which has never been paid. I found the facts as above stated when I returned from Virginia and have refused to recognised the sale of said mills.
As soon as I got back home from Virginia, I took and held possessions of Said mills until they were sold by order of Mr R. V. Montague which sale I protested against. The mills were sold at public sale to Mr. H. H. Ware for the sum of Twelve hundred dollars not a fifth of what they are really worth. I have been informed that there has never been any account sales rendered to the United States government for the sale of Said mills and from the manner in which Montague's agents acted I am disposed to believe the same. I hope you will please be so kind as to give the matter your immediate attention and if possible have the mills turned over to me as I am the only lawful and just owner of Said mills, I hope you will do the best you can for me. for all the funds I had in the world were invested in said mills and I am still oweing Thirty two hundred dollars on their original cost.
The mills above alluded to are located one half miles South West of Scooba Station on the Mobile & Ohio Rail Road in Kemper County and state of Mississippi. There were Sold by order of Mr Montague the (6) Six day of October A.D. 1865 as captured property. All of the forgoing facts I can make affidavit to if required and furthermore I can substantiate it by some of the most respectable citizens in the neighborhood Hopeing
