Statement of Richard Disk, a Freedman of Clarke Co. Ala.

On last New Years day I and my wife made a contract with Mr. John Marshall of Clarke Co. Ala. (said contract was approved by Captain Boillon at Claiborne) to work for him one (1) year. On last Friday evening Mr. Marshall beat my wife over the head with a stick for talking while at work. I went to him and tried to stop him from striking my wife. Mr. Marshall said to me "you D__n son of a B___h, I will go and get John Daniels and come back and choke you. About twelve o'clock that night, after I had gone to bed, Mr. John Lee Marshall (Mr. Marshall's son) and John Daniels took me out of bed, and put a pair of hand-cuffs on my wrists, and took me to Mr. Marshall's house, and said they would let him pass sentence on me.
