a friend informed me and employed me to defend him (I am an attorney at law) and To day he was arraigned for trial, but the Prosecuter Spier by motion of not being ready the case was continued until Wednesday the 14th inst Tom giving Bail in the mean time I have thus been minute in detail to bring to you notice that all these proceedings against Tom are illegal but the Justice of peace are bent upon finding him guilty. Spier has got the honest toil of these freedmen and has now run them off from his premises and refuses to pay them anything, and because they have saught through the proper channel to get what honestly belongs to them they are arrested and no doublt will be thrown into prison, and besides all this, must Tom wait the slow progress of the law before he can get his pay from Spier? What will himself & wife & children live upon, how are they to get bread? You know how slow the civil laws of this state are in the collection of debts, must he wait 18 months or two years before he can get what he has honestly toiled for? is Spier to be allowed to get his labor and use the benefits of it two years? and another thing
