of Alabama and whether, should I take the initiative, in this Community, I might look to any outside source for Assistance There are Union Men enough in this place, mostly men who have been Officers in the U.S. Army, among whom are Major G. W. Candee late U.S. Paymaster at Mobile, and several others who would make a Very fair beginning were we to receive any encouragement from You on this Subject. Once Started the "Good work" would go gloriously on, and I am convinced that Nine tenths of the Freedmen would rather pay the expense out of their own earnings, than have the work to stop, or that their Children should be brought up in ignorance. I hope therefore, General, on my own behalf and that of others, to hear from You at your earliest convenience. I have the honor to be General
