Demopolis Ala
March 6th 1866

General,
I have the honor to make to you the following statement, and to desire your action on the facts hereinafter stated.
On or about the 25th of December 1865 I rented to Captain A. C. Haptanstall as the official representative of the United States Goverment, My Plantation, situated in Marengo County and distant about twelve (12) miles from this point, which contract was duly approved by you.--
I had, on this place, at the time of renting it to said Haptanstall, about three hundred and seventy five (375) bushels of corn, and three thousand (3,000) pounds of Fodder, which-- was not included in any part of the contract.--
This Corn and Fodder, I relied upon as my supply for 1866. Needing it for home consumption--and made my arrangements for removing it accordingly.
After my arrangements had been completed and before the corn was removed, Lieut A. P. Gibson of the 47th Ills Regt. and Quartermaster at this point, and who in fact was living upon, and had in his personal charge the said Plantation, made a proposition to me, whereupon an arrangement was effected, of which the following is a true copy. Captain Haptanstall being absent at the time--
