would be taken up, and no compensation paid for the forage already consumed by the Goverment; that I might remove the Corn as soon as I chose, and that nuthing more--would be done in regard to the matter--
I protested against such action, and demanded that some compensation should be made, but was informed by Major Pierce and Lieut O'Connor that although my contract was perfectly fair and just, that no official notice had been given them of such contract by Hapstanstall or Gibson, and therefore they could not notice it, and in fact they knew nuthing about it.
Finding I could obtain nuthing from them, and desiring to save what I could, I went then, and discovered that fully two hundred and fifty (250) bushels of the Corn, and all of the fodder had already been consumed.
I immediately determined to have nothing further to do with the forage and as soon as I returned to this place, gave Major Pierce written notification that I disclaimed any further control over or concern with the said Corn, and that I would apply to you for orders in the matter, and payment for my Corn.
And in pursuance of said notification and intention, and in consideration of the above stated facts, and that the United States Govt. had and has received the benefit of every bushel of said Corn: and in consideration that I am entirely without means of supplying myself with Corn for this year, and that there has been no neglect or oversight on my part, I humbly make application to you for the redress and respectfully request that you take an impartial view of the matter and pay me-- and I am also ready to verify the above stated facts.--
Hoping that your knowledge and appreciation of right and Equity will not fail to assume their just prominence in, and exert their influence over your actions in this matter.
