government caused me to oppose secession to the extent of my ability and forced me from my home and family to seek refuge under the stars and stripes during the late war.
Having served over three years as Surgeon in the United States Army and having participated in not less than a hundred battles and skirmishes, and my health having been greatly impaired by the exposure and privations to which I was necessarily subject I am physically incapable of attending to professional duties as I did before the war. Indeed my constitution is ruined. Having served the government faithfully during the late war, and having been honorably discharged, I think that I am not presuming too much to ask for a civil office that I am capable of filling.
