Personally appeared before me Geo. A. Harmount an Assistant Superintendent of the Bureau of Refugees Freedmen and A. L. Joe Humphreys col'd and says that on the 15th day of January 1866. he left Opelika area. for John R. Humphreys plantation in Chambers County Ala. and that Govt U.S. soldiers were sent with him by Capt Betty to see that he was not molested while selling ship clothing from there, about seven miles from Opelika about sixty five men met us, took me and tied me, and took the guns away from the soldiers, they then carried me to Lafayette Jail without examination or any charge and kept me there without examination four months and four days, they then took me before Judge Sandy at Tuskegee Ala. and he ordered my release and said I was illegally imprisoned.
