State of Alabama Montgomery County Personally appeared before me Geo. A. Harmount an Ass't Sup't. Bureau of Ref - F. and A.L. in said State and County; ~ Leah Evans Col'd and said that she was lying in her home at Mr. Carter Wade's about two weeks ago on Tuesday when Mr. Wade my employer came and ordered me and I told him I was sick and had been throwing up all night; he ordered me to go with him to Hayneville Lowndes County in said State, he took me about two miles from his plantation and then Mr. Wade and his overseer Mr. Jim Jerrel took me in the woods stripped me stark naked and Mr. Jerrel whipped me about half an hour and Mr. Wade then whipped me about half an hour longer, they had my hands and feet tied to two trees and a handkerchief in my mouth every time I cried they kicked me in my mouth. They made me work the rest of the day and I ran away [[strikethrough]] that night. [[/strikethrough]] the next morning. Witness my mark this 16th day of June 1866.
