My Rgt was mustered out April 30/66 at Selma Ala. I was there finally discharged for the purpose of remaining South came to this place and engaged in business knowing the existence of orders from the War Dept. protecting officers and soldiers of the U S Army from prosecution by the Civil authorities of the states lately in Rebellion for acts done in the discharge of their duty.
I would respectfully state that the existence of that order is known by the Magistrate issuing the Writ against me would also state that the judge of this circuit was furnished with a copy officially by me while in command of this post while the court was in session
I consider the affair purely a political one the feeling here against persons that have served in the federal army or that have anything in common with the US Gov amounts to prescription and is much worse than it was one year ago and knowing that no orders from the War Dept are regarded in the least in this locality unless executed by the military authorities I have written to you
I am Sir
Very Respectfully
Your Obt Servt.
