churches &c, therefore I would advise that you develop your work in the manner rather than extend it by teachers paid by the Government, beyond your present force.  

If the State will institute a good common school system perhaps another method would be the most judicious, yet even then the rapid construction of school-houses, would be striking while the iron was hot.  I am glad to get your ideas on the subject.  Mine are based upon the belief that a people who once establish schools will never be willing to dispense with them.  If you give them their teachers, is there not danger of their letting the schools go down, as they did in New Orleans, the instant the Governmental aid shall be withdrawn?
