Greenville May 28th 1866
Gen Swayne

Dear sir
I have been shown a communication from the Bureau in which I am promised assistance in building up a school among the freedmen. Though, as regards salary of teachers, there is nothing definite, I am now prepared to submit a definite proposition for your consideration.
I will open a shool [[school]] on Monday the 4th day of June with two teachers,(1 white and 1 colored) and 70 or 80 scholars, All the pupils who can shall be required to pay $1.00 per month, those who cannot pay this sum shall pay what they may be able. Now will the Bureau pay rent of building for three months, and make up the salary of the teachers to $75 dollars for the white man, and 35 for the colored?
I think the school will pay about $50 per month,
Yours Resp, Jas. S. Jarratt

Transcription Notes:
The author of the letter did not use a decimal when writing "$1.00," however I am unsure of how to transcribe that without making it look like "$100."
