Genl. W. Swayne
Montgomery,
Ala.

Dear Sirs
Several months since I visited Montgomery for the sole and express purpose of receiving the money assigned in favor of Mr. Lorenzo Griffin of this place for the use of his plantation as a Home Colony by the Government.

He had been led to believe by a conversation he had with you a short time previous that the funds were ready for him and that all he had to do was to come or send for them. With this information in his mind he incurred quite a heavy expense in sending me. I was not able to see you in person though I frequently applied for a personal interview. I was however told that the claim would have to be forwarded to Washington, with the assurance that it would be attended to without delay & that Mr. Griffin would be informed when the money was ready for him. Mr. G. recently returned home after a long absence - informs me that he has not heard a word from you & requests me
to write to you.
Respectfully,
Geo C. Johnson.
