Selma Ala. 24th December 1866.

Lieutenant Shorkley USA
Commanding Post Selma.

Sir:
Some months ago, you will remember I made an effort to know the particulars of certain charges made against me. Through the Surgeon in Chief of District I had learned that charges had been made of "Absence without leave & conduct disgraceful to an officer & gentleman": That the records, at headquarters, showed that they were proferred by Major Ogilby USA Commanding forces at Selma. My duties had been such as not to bring me under Major Ogilby's notice so as to afford him a personal knowledge of the alleged misconduct I wrote to him in New York to learn what the specifications were of this grounds for believing them true. I received no answer; and I am still obliged to guess at what was done to make the charges seem credible. I have now reason to believe you may know more of the origin of these charges than Major Ogilby did; I therefore respectfully request as a personal favor you will inquire into the facts & indorse on this paper your opinion. Captain Glover & Chaplain Gardner may be willing to assist; If you are not convinced that Major Ogilby was deceived by third parties, that the charges were in every way unjust it will only show how serious the injury suffered has been, that there is still occasion for a more thorough investigation.

Respectfully,
Robt. Johnston.
