Cadle endorsed his report upon the inclosed, I was, & had been for several months previous, absent from my Town, & he c'd [[could]] not have known anything of the private bounty I was & had been extending to these my former slaves and most excellent servants, thence, doubtless, his phrase in that Report, "not likely to become a burden upon the Gov't"

I shall be pleased to hear from you, and also to have your several eloquent speeches in the Senate & elsewhere upon the "Reconstruction Question".
