My dear General
It was with no ordinary feelings of satisfaction that I received the assurance of your recollection and esteem. 

Each and all of us have some oasis in memory to which when parched by the dry wind of an unfeeling world, we can revert with never failing pleasure. 

Some such green spot is the reminiscence of my military duty at Camp Chase, and of the friends and acquaintances formed there. Altho' by the fortunes of war we have been widely separated yet I have maintained a correspondence with many, and now after the grand struggle is over, you and me are still left in the service we love and can even on paper
