Respectfully returned with the information that the facts set forth in the within letter, as to the murder of Knight, and also as to the statements in regard to Gov't arms are true. But in my judgement this man Lange is not the man to correct that evil complained of. I have endeavored to correct some of these troubles in North Alabama; but without Military force my efforts were fruitless.
There is but one Co. of Troops at Huntsville, and one at Bridgeport, both of whose Com'dg Officers, claim to be under order, only to guard Gov't Property, and that they are not subject to other details; details have consequently been denied me, and that so by an officer of inferior grade. If I am expected to correct these evils, a few bayonets must be placed under my Command for the Civil Law in a Dead Letter- totally worthless and inoperative in many cases.
