New Orleans January 11th 1866

Genl,
I have received a telegram from the Secretary of the Treasury of which the following is a copy.

"Washington Jan'y 9th/66
"If any Agent of this Department has charge of the Blockade running vessels in the Tombigby River, direct him to turn them over to the Freedmen's Bureau instead of the Navy Department as previously instructed"

I have accordingly this day directed Mr. Montague, at Mobile to turn over these vessels to you,

I presume there may be some charges for expenses properly incurred by Mr Montague, in the care of the vessels since they have been cared for by him; If so they should be paid out of the proceeds of sales of the vessels; Of course you will attend to this and make such arrangements with Mr. Montague therefor as will be mutually satisfactory and proper. Congratulating you upon this order and the funds it will give you in the noble duties you are laboring to execute,

I am very Respectfully
Your obt. Svt.
