They went to a house near the Barrack and endeavored to get in; some soldiers who were near, attracted by their noise, came up, and Smith and other citizens fired two shots. The guard came up, and firing took place near Judge Porter's: Smith was shot through the chest, and he and the rest escaped. They were pursued by Colonel Gandolpho, and arrested some distance from Greenville. The next night - "Pugh" a Citizen, one of the parties was arrested. The statement in the paper I now send (the "Greenville Advocate) is not correct. Smith's confession alone shows this to be the case. Two soldiers were wounded, and one found dead next morning.
