At different times a suspicious company of three men have been seen late in the evening strolling around in the vicinity of my Office; last night they were seen about 9 O'Clock, their faces blacked, and otherwise disguised: one of the Guards who attended the night school for the purpose of escorting the teacher home from school was followed for some distance by said party, after which he came to my room and notified me of the fact. I with the guards went in search of the party with full intentions that if I found such a party of men so disguised to bring them into your presence, by the first train with costume &c unchanged: but I failed to see, or hear any thing more of them when I went to look for them. I assure you that I will do nothing to irritate the feelings of any person, and only go where duty calls me, and as quietly as possible discharge my whole duty, and attempt to bring credit upon any, and every person connected with the Bureau.
