is Agent at present was one of the most rampant secest at first & his wife would tiptoe cursing the U.S.A. Mr. Tenje is a foreigner &c. I have only in family my wife & self. My wife is cousin to Mr. Lincoln. I will send you a coppy of Col Ms recommendation Chief Quartermaser's office, Department of the Cumberland, Nashville, Tenn. June 17th 1865. To whom it may concern: In May 1862 with the troops of Brig Genl Negley I entered Florence Ala, and was made Provost Marshal of that place for a brief period/ The only welcome I received from any citizen of Florence was from Dr.H.W. McRay who kindly invited and entertained me at his residence. The Dr. has since been compelled to leave home, and has suffered severely from the confederate army - He bears a high character for uprightness and integrity and sound fidelity to the Federal Government throughout the war - I command him to the favourable consideration of the constituted authorities of the Government, army officer and loyal citizens everywhere -

Now Gen if you will give me this appointment I shall feel duly thankful - I would ask it, but I have a family & that would assist us some - I did not try to put any property out of the way of the U.S.A. But was a strong union man. & when Genl. Shermans force, passed through here I was sent for - & I suppose that was one reason why the Rebels was so hard on me. I expect I have worried you so I will close wishing you well & also hope you will reply to me. I am yr obd.
