Montgomery Ala Dec 20th 1866 Major Sir On or about the 5th day of July 1865 H W Granger and myself left upon the plantation of Gardner Jarrett, living near Macon Marion County Ala one four mule team one horse and one waggon: on or about the 10th day of July 1865 parties came to the place and stole the four mules but the next day one of the mules returned The parties left in the yard form where the mules were taken a letter addressed to Gardner Jarrett telling him not to look after the mules and threatening his life if he did On or about the 12th of July 1865 one Gardner Bunkhead came to the dwelling house of said Gardner Jarrett's and demanded from a Colored man, then in the employ of Mr Granger and myself, this letter threatening his life if he did not give it up. I have that letter in my possession and am quite positive
