General,
At the commencement of the Confederate War, the presence of a large number of sick and wounded soldiers of this place rendered it necessary on the promptings of humanity that some provisions should be made for nursing and providing them with medical attendance. With The aid of a few citizens, we established a private hospital, which for a considerable period was sustained by private contributions and by concerts, given by the young ladies. The call upon our charities becoming greater than we could respond to, I made frequent applications for aid, from the Medical Department, which after almost every effort had been exhausted was responded to, and our Hospital taken charge of by the Medical directorship of This Department. The consequence of my repeated applications Dr. Moragne then a Surgeon in The Confederate service was sent to Greenville; and at this instance a site for a Hospital was selected by him and myself. The most eligible position was upon vacant lots upon which immediate steps were taken to erect the necessary buildings, which lots were the property of Mr.
