The undersigned citizens of Sumter County hearing that Joseph W. Jenkins has been arrested by the Freedman's Bureau for killing a negro man named Alfred and believing that a mans good character should be duly considered in the hour of distress; hereby certify that we have long known Mr Jenkins, that he is a man of good character and standing in the community, that no charge has ever been preferred against him before this, that he is esteemed and respected wherever known and we do not believe him capable of so cruel and bloody an act or in any way aiding or abetting therein.
