On Monday evening (the 5th ulto.] ) Mr. A. J. Dirby made the above statement to me. The next morning I sent a detail of men who arrested Jenkins, King, and a man by the name of Freeman & Jacob Cold. Cook made his escape on the morning after the murder.
Judge Coleman and other citizens of Livingston come with the prisoners for the purpose of getting me to turn the case over to the civil authorities of Sumpter County, which I declined doing until I heard from "Hd. Qrs." and upon receiving your dispatch I sent the prisoners under guard to Mobile in accordance with instructions.
Hoping that the course I have pursued in this matter will meet your approval.
