Ridge in Mr Herren's Neighborhood after his wife & clothes, and while making his arrangements with intention of returning to Doct. Jines' to fulfil his contract, he was attacked with "Small Pox", having been exposed to it in Mobile from which point he had lately returned. The Community finding he had "Small Pox", drove him from Pillar to Post and refused him admittance into any of their Houses - many threatening to shoot him. While in this condition wandering houseless homeless and friendless his Wife communicated with him, and she, being intimately associated with her children, was also driven with her children from shelter, and all were alike wanderers - one with the loathsome Malady fastened upon him, and balance directly and imminently exposed to it's baneful contagion. In this condition of the family Mr Herren found them and knowing well the character of the Man, prompted by sympathy for all, and believing that the Man would repay him, he asked him if he was under contract, to which he replied No. Mr Herren then saw Doct Bledsoe and told him if he would treat the Man he (Herren) would pay him for his services
