Tuscaloosa Ala. April 20th 1866. Major O.D. Kinsman Asst. Adjt Gen'l. Major; I have the honor to state, that, on the 18th inst. I forwarded to Col. Cadle A.A. Gen'l. the facts relative to our attempt to mob Lawrence Berry (col'd) - agent for the "Nationalist" his mission being approved by order of Gen'l Swayne. I am satisfied Berry said nothing in his talk to a body of Colored People a few nights since - that ought to disturb a well meaning and enlightened community - And I have advised him to proceed with his legitimate business, adding that I would defend him in it. The truth is, in this Section among a large proportion of the Whites, The Blacks have been slaves, and this class of Whites do not intend their condition shall be bettered -
