Your letter of the 19th inst. by James Leonard communicating his complaints of the citizen &c. refusing to allow him to occupy the church at this place &c. is rec'd.

The Methodist Church here is built with a basemt and the whites allowed the colored to occupy the basement - two thirds of the time and when Leonard came out here. The station Minister was preaching to them every sabath afternoon and teaching (with a sufficient number of assistants) a sabath school of some two hundred colored persons, and when Leon made known to the colored portion of the church that his business was to establish an African M E Church they all determined to go with him and our minister resigned his charge of them, and the Trustees of the church gave them note that they would have to get some other place to hold
