A Freedman named William living on the place of Mrs Virginia Irwin near Carrolton Pickens County Ala. was taken to Carrollton charged with taking a melon from the field of Robert Irwin - (which melon said William had leave to take by authority of a freedman working on shares for Robert Irwin) and put to work out the sum of about thirty dollars $30./ in a chain gang at Carrollton. I suggest the case be referred to our Office of the "Bureau" in that District.
