Military History

I served three (3) months as an enlisted man of the 1st Vt. Vols. - from May 9th 1861 - to August 1861.  Sept 16th 1861 I was commissioned 1st Lieut - Co. "E" 5th Vt. Vols. and served in that organization with the Army of the Potomac until June 29th 1862, at the battle of Savage Station Va. when a rifle ball entered my right cheek and passed directly though to the left side of my neck, injuring in my vocal organs permanently, and rendering me unfit for active service during the six months following - July 24th 1862.  I was promoted Captain Co. J 5th Vt. Vols. - January 19th 1863.  I again entered the field and with my Regt engaged in the taking - and retreat of one St. Maries [[Marye's]] Heights, Chancellorsville Va. May 1863 - also crossing the Rappahannock and capturing rifle its and prisoners just below Fredricksburg Va. June 25th 1863.  Was present at the battle of Gettysburg - not engaged.
