Tuscaloosa Ala. Oct. 12th 1866.

Major Gen'l Wager Swayne
Asst. Commissioner
Montgomery Ala,

General,

I am trying to get an appointment in one of the new Regiments of the Regular Army, and although the limited knowledge you doubtless have of me, personally and officially, makes it quite a liberty - I desire to ask your assistance.

Herewith I send extracts of my military history, they will not present any new facts of valor, but show what I did in the line of duty.

I have made application to the Adjutant General U.S.A. for permission to appear before the board of Examination of Applicants for the Regular Army, and have sent my papers and records to Hon. Geo. F. Edmund. U.S.S. Burlington Vt. who with other influential gentlemen of the same State will help me.

It has been my misfortune not to become acquainted personally, with but very few of my commanding Generals - and most of those few I have lost trace of in the disbanding of our large army -
