Sir,

I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of your communication of the 15th inst.

I am informed that a building containing fourteen (14) rooms 15 x 15 can be hired temporarily for the use of the Government, at a cost of three dollars ($3.00) a room per month.  With the privilege of taking any number of them not less than two (2).

In my report and application for troops of the 9th inst, I placed the number, at a sufficiently high estimate, to meet resistance.  This emergency will not probably arise, during the actual presence of troops.

Therefore I cannot be understood to apply for the number of men
