I, William Q. Smith, Commissioner of the the District Court of the United States for the middle District of Alabama, hereby certify, that on the 7th day of November 1865 at my office at Selma Ala personally appeared before me J.E. Prestridge of the County of Dallas, State of Alabama who being by me duly sworn, took and subscribed before me the following oath:

I do hereby solemnly swear (or affirm) in the presence of Almighty God, that I will henceforth faithfully support, protect, and defend the defend the Constitution of the United States, and the Union of States thereunto, and that I will, in like manner, abide by and faithfully support all laws and proclamations which have been made during the existing rebellion with reference to the emancipation of slaves.  So help me God.
