for the months of January and February which will not require an appropriation exceeding that heretofore made for month. I feel assured after the first of March the State will be able to maintain her own poor, and not longer to appear to the National Government, for assistance.  Without that further assistance there must be much suffering among the poor widows and orphans of Alabama.  Without your concurrence, or that of the Secretary of War, I very much fear the Freedmans Bureau will discontinue supplies, and leave the poor to suffer

It is generally supposed the crop of corn made the present year will [[strikethrough]] not [[/strikethrough]] be entirely inadequate to bread the State until another crop can be made.  Hoping to hear from you in reply
