Greenville, Ala.
21t December, 1866.

General,

It affords me much gratification to add my recommendation to the application of Dr. R.G. Murphy, for the post of attending Surgeon for the Colonists proposed to be removed here.

I have known Dr. Murphy for many years and can speak, with great confidence of his ability as a physician and gentleman, from my own personal knowledge. There are few of the Faculty possessed of higher qualifications, and no mean of a more elevated sense of honor and principle. He will do credit to any employment given him.

I trust I may be allowed to repeat, what I have said before, that in my judgement much good to the Colonists, and much benefit to the government will attend their removal nearer this Agency.

I have the honor to be,
With the most sincere respect,
Your very Obt. Servt.
Benj. F. Porter.

Major General Wager Swayne.
