on the said lots, proposing to the said trustees that if they did not object to said improvements, they would be left on the lots on the property of said company. Dr Hinkley continued in charge and possession of said property until the surrender, when he turned it all over to Surg. Leonard of Genl L.F. Hubbard's command of U.S. forces at this place, in May last, and as he informs us, with a full report of the facts of this case.
The said property has been occupied and used ever since for Hospital purposes, by the Federal Troops, until a few days since, it was turned over to and is now held by Capt. Haponstall of your command, and as there is now a suitable building, in this place, used for Hospital purposes for Freedmen & which has been so used, ever since the occupation of this place, there is no good reason why we should not have our Academy building, with the improvements added by Dr Hinkley turned over to us.
While the said property was occupied by the command of Col Bowzer of the 11th Missouri Reg't some of the troops took down and moved off the stable and cow house erected by Dr Hinkley as aforesaid.
The Trustees have never received from the Confederate or United States authorities any compensation for the use and occupation of their property, as aforesaid; altho repeated application has been made for compensation as well as for the possession of their said property, and the object of
