Headquarters Department of Louisiana New Orleans La. March 19th 1866. Major Genl C. R. Woods Comdg Dept of Alabama Mobile Alabama Sir. The Blockade runners "Mary" Virgin" Red Gauntlett" and "Heroine" were formally surrendered to me by Lieut General Taylor as Rebel Army transports, to be turned over to me at Mobile, at the same time the gunboats and navy transports were turned over to Actg Rear Admiral Thatcher The "Heroine" was sent down and duly turned over The "Mary" Virgin" and "Red Gauntlett" could not be brought down in consequence of the low stage of water in the Tombigbee River. Guards and crews for these boats were sent up by me to take charge of these boats, and bring them to Mobile as soon as there was sufficient water in the Tombigbee to enable them to pass the shoals.
