Selma Alabama
May 14th 1866

J. Q. Smith Esq

Dear Sir
I am requested by our Mayor Dr. J. T. Reese to write to you and on behalf of the city of Selma, to ask of you no small favour:- which is that you as early as may be convenient call on Genl Swayne - and induce him if possible to give an order that the city of Selma and Dallas County commissioners may take possession of the Masonic Institute of this city at an early day. As the building has been purchased by the city of Selma and presented to this county for a court house, and immediate possession is very important that the necessary repairs and alterations - may be made to put in readiness for the different courts.
The building is now used for a Freedmans Hospital. If immediate possession can be had of the premises referred to it will be an important matter to this city
