Selma Ala, 16th May 1866.

Col Cadle

When I was abroad from Ala in the service of the United States the rooms that had been my place of business for ten years were taken for use on of by the military authority & used as office and quarters by the post commissary. They continue to be so used. desiring to resume my business I applied to Capt. Wicks, then in possession of the business, he said the Col in command had authorized him to give possession that the establishment being reduced the business could be accomodated in less room. waiting the action of the local authority who he said were competent to make the disposition asked for. Capt. W. was relieved, and the place headed into the possession of Capt. Groves, who, though aware of the loss the continued occupation causes me, does not see any occasion for action on his part, or the holding of the rooms entails as expence on the government - besides the rooms are convenient to the warehouses where the stores are kept. I therefore respectfuly request that if it is possible without embarrassment to the public business the rooms may be returned to be used as before the way. - The property belongs to the heirs of the late T.B.Goldsby - The family were all willing that I should keep the premises as long as I had occasion for them, & it was substantialy the same to me as if I had had a lease to this effect. Hoping it may be so ordered that no one need be subjected to law

I am very
respectfully
Rbt Johnston.
