with muskets and told them to stop any person after dark within the enclosure of said stables and to call me. - I was then stopping at the former Hd. Qrs. of Col. Gand[[guess]], close to the stables. Since the departure of the Troops, Mr. Abrams the owner of the building, requested me several times to evacuate the building, because he had rented out the same on private parties. On the first of this, I complayed with his request and moved to my office.
But at before nine o'clock this morning, driver "Edward" informed me of the Six mules having been stolen, my suspicion rested on him immediately, as being connected with the robbery. My Clerk Mr. Wagner came up at the time the driver informed me of the robbery, and accused Edward also of being connected with it and advised to have him arrested, when all at once E. ran off remarking that no man about could arrest him. A few ineffectual shots after him, and chase of about three quarters of a mile,
