Since your visit to this place nothing new of importance has transpired. The people seem well disposed and I do not apprehend any difficulty in carrying out the instructions regarding the Bureau. Yet it is not to be supposed that Freedmen would be justly treated if there was no officer of the Bureau stationed here. That in case of necessity my requisition for troops will be filled I did not fail to give the people to understand.
Under authority from the Governor a company of militia has been formed at this place and the Captain comanding the men has reported to me that his command is at my disposal at any time.
The Freedmen Camp I found on inspection is a most filthy & untenable condition and unsuitable for any improvement. I have taken possession of the hospital erected by Genl Moore, which is now
