goes to a Magistrate here gets out warrant against Hagerty and today the trial came off. Now my friend, how do you suppose the case went? Well I will tell you. When the case was brought before this "Reconstructed functionary, He said "The case didnt come under his jurisdiction" Now here comes the puzzle to me after making the above remark. he closed the court without giving the Freedman an inkling of a chance. and turned to him and said "Sir (to the Freedman) you have the costs to pay" The name of this unjust Magistrate is Jas Thomas. Is this the way that we are to be treated? If it is we are not free only by name This Fellow Thomas asserts that he has authority to take up all freedmen that is not in the employ of some white man. I never pay any attention to know such talk myself. For if he or any other of these Scoundrels attempts [[strikethrough]] their [[/strikethrough]] to place fetters on my civil rights they will be made to regret it. And yet another case, today the same Hagerty have beat a youth in his employ he says "He will whip a negro as quick now, or quicker than ever he would. I hope I have not worried you by giving you a detailed account of the above base proceedings. You will confer an especial favor on me by letting Gen Swayne see this or Mr Silsby. I expect to be in your city probably Saturday week. I want to see if I can get a transportation to Richmond Va. next month give my love to all my friends in Montgomery and receive my sincere regards for yourself & family. Yours very Respectfully Wm V Turner
