On the 3rd of February AD 1866 I bought of the Freedmans Bureau at this place, a Flat Boat sold as property of the United States under an executive order dated 11th Nov 1865 for which I paid to the Bureau six hundred and thirty seven dollars 50/100. The contract of purchase I herewith submit, which was approved by Col Robinson, your predecessor - an officer

In [[strikethrough]] March [[/strikethrough]] March last, suit was brought against me by David James, who was the owner of the Boat, and a few days ago, a Judgement was rendered in his favor for the Boat  I defended the suit, and you have a full statement of the trial as shown by the Bill of exceptions taken at the trial  I am advised that the ruling of the court was correct under the laws of the United States, and the executive order, by virtue of which the Boat was sold to me.
