Stevenson, Ala., 1st Month 26th/66

To Gen. O. O. Howard

Resp. friend,

I feel it my duty to write a few lines to thee in regard to the Freedmen of this locality.

I left my Penna. home in the Fall of 1864, under the auspices of the Penna. Freedmen's Relief Assoc'n., since which time, I have been engaged in Teaching the Freed people this place; and doing what I could to elevate their condition in life.-

On the 13th of last month, I reluctantly consented to temporarily serve as sub-agent of the Freedmen's Bureau in this town, until a suitable person could be found, who would be willing to accept the office.
