Stevenson, Ala., 3rd Mon 1st 1866.
To John B. Callis

Respd friend

Under existing circumstances, it was thought best to not bring up witnesses before T. J. Mitchell yesterday, to prove the unsuitableness &c of John McCauley, to serve as Agent of the Freedmen's Bureau: but from all that I have seen and heard lately, I feel thoroughly convinced that the said John McCauley is not at all a suitable man for that Office; and that the immediate appointment of W. C. Webb in his place, would satisfy the people generally of this town (both black & white); and would greatly tend to promote the interests, and carry out the real objects in view by the establishment of the Freedmen's Bureau.
