Sir! The undersigned respectfully show to the General Commdg District of Alabama, that they have received from Brvt Maj. Genl Chas R Woods Commd'g Department of Georgia and Alabama the following communication

Gentlemen, Your letter of the 5 Instant has just been received.
The order of Colonel Mone 34d New Jersey when in command at Tuscaloosa prohibiting the sale of liquors to Federal Soldiers was legal and the enforcement of it proper.
All orders of a Military Post being a Matter of record, the verbal permission of the Officer issuing the order to violate any of its provisions becomes void so soon as he leaves the post and is replaced by another officer: And it is the duty of the officer taking permanent command of the post to either enforce the orders or revoke them.
